Sampan in China

We went for a ride on this sampan in China

The photo shows a sampan ride in Suzhou China.

Suzhou is a town much like Venice in Italy as it has streets of water - canals all over the city.

The Chinese have preserved this very old city (more than 3,000 years old) and kept it so that it is interesting to tourists as well as locals who live here.

The Sampan ride is propelled by a woman who uses a single oar in the rear of the boat where you would expect a rudder to be.

It is an old method of propulsion and still used to this day. Amazingly to me, she sang Chinese Sea Shanties as she worked her way through the canals with us aboard.
